Introduction

The thought of starting an architectural or interior project can be daunting. However, with a little strategic planning, a project can get off to a smooth and effective start. Drawings are the main format in which design decisions are explored and communicated. The way of drawing changes as the project is refined and refined. At the beginning of the design, freehand sketching is the best way to test concepts, while later in the process, computer-aided design (CAD) is required to refine dimensional decisions and coordinate with consulting engineers.

Whatever the scale of the project, four basic elements must be considered from the beginning Site Study, Client’s Requirement, Project Schedule, and Estimation and Costing.

Site Study

Generally, a client hires a designer as soon as a site or space becomes available. It is then up to the designer to analyze the site to ensure that it meets customer requirements. Sometimes a client has not just one area in mind, but a few options that the designer will test to determine which will best suit the client’s needs. In this case, it is up to the planner or designer to determine the best layout for the site and complete the project within those constraints.

Client’s Requirement’s

This defines the requirements of the end user who will use the storage space. Whether it is a home renovation or a home kitchen renovation, or a newly built restaurant, this step should evaluate the functional performance, capabilities, and limitations of the available space.

In addition, the designer must indicate which spaces, functions, or attributes to add to improve functionality and make the site appropriate and attractive. The requirement must be specified in a short written document that describes all functional, dimensional, and relational requirements.

This whole process can be broken down into three types of activities: gathering, analyzing, and documenting information.

This step is critical to the design process as it is where the customer’s problems and goals are clearly identified. Good communication is key to formulating the program and managing expectations for the design phase. A lack of understanding of the objectives at this stage can lead to cost overruns during construction or, more detrimentally, a project that does not meet the client’s basic needs.

Project Schedule

Managing a design project takes as much creative thinking as the design itself. The best projects start with a carefully planned project plan. Typically, a project process is divided into several phases to set milestones for decision-making both within the design team and with the client.

The schedule should cover all project milestones in the form of a checklist and assign primary responsibility for monitoring to one team member. If the date required to complete the project is already known, it is best to work backward from that date to determine the duration of each milestone.

Estimation and Costing

Setting Up a Project Estimating is critical to streamlining the design process. It immediately reports the scope of the work and the degree of completion. A designer’s main concern is to meet the client’s budget and ensure that the budget is realistic and that a conceptual price estimate must be made early on.

The danger is that construction costs are extremely volatile and can change depending on many factors such as inflation and changing market conditions. Therefore, for early pricing studies or baseball field assumptions, it is important to consider contingencies for unknown factors.
