AutoCAD is one of the most widely used programs in the world and you have probably come across it at some point in your career.
After working countless hours on a project for AutoCAD, you will surely have your own set of favorite commands to standardize some of the steps. We also bet you haven’t memorized them all or you often forget them. To help you remember, we’ve put together a list of 30 commands that can help you speed up your work game, discover new shortcuts, or use them as a handy resource when you forget the name of the command you need.
When you’re done reading, we’d love to know what your favorite commands are (including the ones we don’t include). We will use your comments to help us update the article!
Here are the top 30 Commands
- OVERKILL – deletes overlapping duplicate objects
- PURGE – removes unused layers, blocks, styles, etc.
- AUDIT – checks the current drawing for errors and attempts to fix the errors.
- RECOVER – Repairs a damaged drawing file.
- RECOVERALL – Repairs a damaged drawing file along with all attached xrefs.
- AREA- Calculates the area and perimeter of a defined object or a surface that you select vertex by vertex, according to the metric units defined in settings.
- BURST- Explodes a block or an object, but keeps its attributes intact after exploding it. Highly recommended.
- BMPOUT– Generates a bitmap image (.bmp format) after selecting a series of objects, surfaces, or regions.
- MLEDIT– Edit multiple parallel lines.
- QDIM– Quickly creates a dimension, after selecting objects.
- QLEADER– Quickly creates a leader, and a leader annotation.
- QSELECT– Quickly select objects according to a list of available filters: colors, line type and layers, among others.
- SAVEALL– Automatically saves all drawings you are working on.
- SPELL– Checks the spelling in texts using the language settings from your operating system, not AutoCAD.
- XLINE– Creates an infinite line.
- DIV – DIVIDE – Creates evenly spaced point objects or blocks along the length or perimeter of an object.
- M2P – Mid Between 2 Points – Snap to a location between two points.
- PDFIMPORT – Converts a PDF into a CAD dwg.
- NCOPY– Copies linework or objects from a nested object into your current drawing. Especially useful for bringing XREF linework into current drawings.
- DIMBASELINE– Creates a dimension that starts from a baseline of earlier dimensions that is linear, angular or coordinate.
- TORIENT– Orients text to a specified angle or most readable angle. Also works on Block Attributes.
- XCLIP– Trims a block’s visible area using a boundary line. Use the command first, then set or draw the boundary.
- WIPEOUT– Allows you to set boundaries on top of lines and objects that “wipes out” everything behind it. Like a reverse hatch. It’s a good idea to put all your wipeouts on one layer so you can turn them on and off as you wish.
- Change Your MText to Lower Case or Upper Case- Instead of retyping MText if you forgot to capitalize it, right-click and select CHANGE CASE. Or use CTRL + SHIFT + U or CTRL + SHIFT + L, for upper case and lower case respectively.
- PREVIEW– Similar to print preview in other programs, allows you to see how your paperspace drawing will plot went sent to a plotter.
- MENUBAR-Toggles you to the old style menu bar.
- FACETRES– Adjust the smoothness of curves on a solid.
- QLATTACH– Attaches leader line to MTEXT.
- XDWGFADECTL-Quickly changes XREF settings back to normal by setting the value at 0. Will fix “faded” XREFs in your drawing.
- BO / BOUNDARY– If you want to split an object in half, simply draw a line through it and use the BOUNDARY command in each half to create correctly sized polylines and erase the original objects.
