Upcoming High-Tech City With 10 Minute Concept In Seoul

The idea of a “15-minute city” in which residents can reach work and leisure facilities in a quarter of an hour on foot – or by bicycle – from their homes has become considerably more prominent among planners during the period of Covid-19 pandemic has won.

The concept of the “city at 15 minutes” was first proposed in 2016 by the Franco-Colombian academic Carlos Moreno and was recently promoted by the mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo, who proposed that the French capital become a “quarter-hour city” to do – fifteen minutes from the city – during their recent re-election campaign.

Today, a group of architects is planning an even more ambitious neighborhood in Seoul, the capital of South Korea: 10 minutes.

Designed by Dutch architectural firm UNStudio and backed by Hyundai Development Company (a real estate company owned by the conglomerate behind the automaker of the same name), the neighborhood will also be completely car-free. A press release for the project claimed that “all the amenities of the city” are within a 10-minute walk of people’s homes.

Under the name of “Project H1”, a former industrial site will be transformed into a networked “Smart City”. With eight residential buildings with co-working offices and study rooms, the 125-acre neighborhood will also be home to entertainment venues, fitness centers, swimming pools, and even urban hydroponic farms. The project includes eight residential towers as well as retail, commercial, and leisure facilities.

The architects also said clean energy will be generated on-site while rain catchment and storage systems are being developed to reduce water consumption.

But the Covid-19 pandemic has seen growing interest in the concept. As people around the world work from home and avoid public transport, city planners have started putting pedestrian zones on the streets and rethinking how cities deal with dense populations.
